The Science
Researchers at Stanford University have been able to measure the energy flow into the body and have verified that Reiki (or Chi) enters through the Crown Chakra (at the top of the head) and exits through the palms.
Scientists have accepted that all matter is fundamentally bundles of energy that materialise and disappear in a seemingly random fashion. Our energy field (aura) can be detected by electromagentic measuring instruments. Energy flows throughout our body along meridians, which were identified by Traditional Chinese Medicine, thousands of years ago. We also have energy centres in the body called chakras, which were recognised in Ancient India. Given that our bodies are energy, we are surrounded by energy and we can pass energy through our body to other living organisms, surely it makes sense to treat the energy of a living being as well as the physical symptom.

What is Reiki?
Reiki is a simple yet effective oriental method of working with energy. It is non-invasive and holds no religious attachments. You can use it for your own benefit and for the benefit of other people. Reiki originally came from Japan , founded by Mikao Usui, and was very much about working on oneself it was a system that you could use for self-healing, self-development & spiritual development. Healing others was a minor aspect of the system; it was simply something you could do if you followed Usui’s system
The word Reiki seems to mean ‘a system that has been arrived at through a moment of enlightenment’.
Reiki is now being classed as a complementary therapy, since the 1970’s when Reiki first came to the West, Reiki teaching has focused much more on Reiki as a treatment technique, the system appears to many people to be a sort of oriental spiritual healing, a hands-on treatment method that involves channeling energy. One of the most dramatic observations of Reiki is that the Reiki doesn't appear to run out. Reiki practitioners can continue treating people and animals all day and the Reiki will flow just as strongly as when they started at the beginning of the day. The Reiki practitioner will also have received Reiki through treating clients, which means they may often finish the day stronger and with more vitality than when they started.
This differentiates Reiki from many other healing systems. Most systems involve the use of the physical energy of the body as the energy source to use on the client. In turn this drains the physical energy of the practitioner meaning that the overall effectiveness of the treatment is dependent upon the wellbeing and vitality of the practitioner. The number of patients that can be treated in a day depends upon the practitioner's ability to 'recharge' his physical energy.
Reiki is intelligent energy, it goes where it is needed, because of this there is no need to diagnose in order to treat with Reiki. Reiki practitioners are not trained to diagnose problems, they may have an inclination as to where the problem is, however, legally Reiki practitioners are not allowed to diagnose a problem or suggest treatment. If the client would like a diagnosis for their symptoms, they should seek medical advice.
Many Reiki practitioners have noticed that as their skill with Reiki develops, so does their intuition. This means that the practitioner often becomes 'aware' of what is wrong with the client. In this case we can suggest that the client goes for a check up, saying that there is an energy blockage in a certain area of the body.
There are lots of ways of practicing Reiki, with different practitioners adding their own variation, but, whatever the variety, Reiki is something that you can use for yourself, for your own personal benefit and development and it is also something that you can share with others.
What can Reiki do for me?
Choosing to practice Reiki regularly tends to be a life changing experience for most people. One of the most noticeable changes is often the reduced stress levels, especially in this day and age, stress and tension levels seem be forever rising. Reiki can really bring a change to this, making you take the time each day to sit, relax, centre yourself and appreciate how much you really have.
Reiki teaches you to switch off to all the worries, not so that you don’t care, but so that when you are meditating and centering yourself you can let go off all that baggage that can follow you around for the day, making all your tasks seem somewhat unpleasant. You can learn to ‘flick the switch’ and give your mind and body the break it needs, thus often meaning that once you have given yourself a break from the stress of problems in your way, giving yourself time without constant worries in your head a solution may just pop up and usually does. This is the very basics of Reiki; improving yourself, and through improving ourselves we attract better things into our lives, from like minded people, a happier work place, and a happier and more fulfilled life.
What can Reiki do for my horse?
Unfortunately there aren't any scientifically proven cases of how Reiki can help your horse, however, listed below are some of the problems or areas that I and others have found Reiki has helped with:
Sweet itch
- Tendon Injuries
- Ligament Injuries
- Laminitis
- Colic
- Loading problems
- Spooking
- Emotional issues
- Anxiety
- Appetite loss
- Weaving
- Wind sucking
- Cribbing
- Box walking
- Physical Injuries
- Pre-show nerves
- Competition stress (for horse and rider!)
- Performance
- Separation anxiety
- Catching up
- Groundwork
- Riding
- Owner horse relationship
How do I learn Reiki?
There are many courses around teaching Reiki, many have slight variations but all lead back to using the same energy and for the same purposes.
Before practising Reiki one needs to receive an empowerment or attunement, this is your connection to Reiki, yes as I’m sure you know people can heal without being attuned to Reiki, but their healing ability is often affected by their physical wellbeing at that time and any other event in the healers’ life. People use their own personal energy to heal, so it can be quite draining.
After receiving an attunement Reiki practitioners draw energy from an unlimited source, drawing energy through their own body and to the client, so in effect the Reiki Practitioner is receiving Reiki and being healed at the same time as the client. The Reiki Practitioner is just a channel for the energy to flow through. They are not generating the energy, just gently directing it.
How effective is Reiki?
It has been found by practitioners that Reiki is most effective when given as a series of treatments. A 'one off' treatment will still produce some effect and help your horse, however for longer lasting results, especially for the more severe cases, a series of Reiki treatments would be advised.
How many treatments?
Just having one Reiki treatment can bring great changes for the better for you and/or your horse, however, most Reiki Practitioners will recommend a series of treatments, say between four and six, to enable them to get deeper into the root of a problem.
What do I need to do before a treatment?
Before a Reiki Practitioner can carry out a Reiki treatment on your horse, you must first seek approval from your vet. This should consist of a simple phone call, to establish that your Vet is happy for your horse to receive Reiki.
Reiki is a complementary therapy and is not intended to replace medical or veterinary care and advice. Persons or equines needing medical/veterinary attention should call their doctor/Veterinary Surgery.
